CYT DIVERSITY PLAN UPDATE | Listening. Learning. Leading.

CYT is staying actively involved in discussing, planning, and implementing ways to use our platform to create change for the better when it comes to taking a stand against racial injustice. Our mission states that Christian Youth Theater develops character and creativity in kids of all ages through quality theater arts training that brings families and communities together while reflecting the Creator. We are taking this opportunity to recommit to our mission statement, and to ensure that we are always striving to create a culture that reflects the type of character we want to cultivate. We’d like to share what we’ve been working on so far.

LEARNING

CYT is committed to developing character, which means we are committed to lifelong learning, and this includes learning about ways to increase diversity and fight racial injustice. As such, our staff and Board will conduct diversity and inclusion training. We will also start holding “candid conversations” as a way to create a safe space to have difficult conversations about current events, in order to educate ourselves, reflect, and hopefully carry on the conversations with our family, friends and communities.

LEADING

CYT has created a Diversity and Inclusion Committee whose objective is to stay focused and vigilant on this issue. The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will review your feedback and develop further action plans to hold ourselves accountable in our pursuit of fighting racial injustice. We don’t see this as the ultimate solution, but rather the starting point for a journey we hope you’ll join us on.

We continue to collectively stand together as a CYT family against racial injustice. We will keep listening, including, and loving for as long as it takes, and we thank you for doing it with us.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” Hebrews 10:24

  1. It’s not just about race…. it’s about welcoming people, both children and adults from all backgrounds. When I look back on my time as a cyt parent for 15 years, I am sad to reflect how often the welcome mat was pulled in. As Christians, we were so afraid that our children might be around gay people and then somehow turn into one that we failed to recognize the humanity in those around us. Somehow it became ok to tell kids that homosexuality was the ultimate sin yet while failing to acknowledge the wolves among us. Reading the very private and personal accounts by those who have been brave enough to come forward in these last few days has broken my heart. Not just for their pain but for my failure to act, for my decision to be a bystander. When did it become acceptable to yell and belittle children who were trying their best but still made mistakes? Were the roles my children had really so important that I couldn’t speak out? If we believe that involvement in theatre arts builds confidence, why were so many children left doubting the value of their contribution. Did we really think they were all going to make it on Broadway and this was the price to pay? And was there a greater Christian value to model than “loving each other as ones self?”
If cyt is serious about change, now is the time to stand with those who have been harmed, support the proper action against those who harmed and set aside the pride of creation.
